About Rajasthan High Court

The Rajasthan High Court is the High Court for the state of Rajasthan, India. The court was started on 21st June 1949 under the Rajasthan High Court Act, 1949. The seat of the Rajasthan High Court is located at Jodhpur. The 5 High Courts functioning in the different units of States were at Jaipur and Bikaner, Jodhpur, the High Court of former Rajasthan and Matsya Union. The Rajasthan High Court Ordinance which was established in 1949 abolished these various jurisdictions and provided for a single high court for the entire state. Kamala Kant Varma was the first Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court. On 31st January 1977, a bench was formed at Jaipur under the sub-section 2 of section 51 of the States Organization Act, 1956 which was dissolved in 1958. The High Court of Rajasthan, started with the strength of only 6 judges.

At present the sanctioned strength of the Rajasthan High court judges is 50 and the actual strength is 30. The President of India is appointing the Chief Justice and Judges. The President should consult with the Governor of the State and the Chief Justice of India. Currently as far as the lower Judiciary is concerned the State is divided into 35 Judgeship’s. There are 346 courts of District Judge Cadre, 265 courts of Civil Judge in Senior Division Cadre and 412 courts of Civil Judge in Junior Division Cadre.
