The Indira Gandhi National Tribal University is established in 2007 under the Act of Parliament, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Act, 2007, by Government of India and is strategically located at Anuppur district in Madhya Pradesh. The main objective of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University is to provide quality education and research opportunities to the tribal population of India. The educational coverage is across the country has made this University one of the most prominent member in contributing towards the tribal population of our country.

The Indira Gandhi National Tribal University is spread across with a total land area of 300 acres in Madhya Pradesh. The administration of the University is handles by a team which includes Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Finance Officer, Controller of Examination, Admin Officers, Executive Council, Academic Council, and non-teaching staff. Dr. S.M. Jharwal is the Chancellor and Prof. T. V. Kattimani is the Vice Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University.
